Morekuzhambu - Buttermilk Curry

Morekuzhambu is a spicy, sour curry and a summer food. Vegetables like, ladies finger(okra), ash gourd  (winter melon) or bottle gourd can be used. Even ripe mangoes, which is abundant in summer can be used, it adds sweetness to the sour and spicy curry and makes it more delicious than the curry with vegetables.

1. Tuar dal - 2tsp ( soaked in water for 10minutes)
2. Raw rice - 1 1/2tsp
3. Green Chilly - 2
4. Cumin - 1tsp
5. Curd - 100 ml
6. Grated coconut - 1 1/2tbsp
7. Ginger - 1inch piece (optional)
8. Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
9. Mustard+ urad dal - 1tsp
10. Curry leaves - few
11. Fenugreek seeds - 1/2tsp
12. Oil - 1tsp
13. Pumpkin - 250gms

1. Mix 300 ml of water to the curd or process in a mixer to get a smooth butter milk.
2. Peal the skin, cook the evenly chopped ash gourd in water.
3. Combine tuard dal, raw rice, green chilly, cumin, ginger, coconut and blend to a fine paste.
4. Add turmeric powder, the ground paste, cooked vegetable and salt to the buttermilk, mix well.
5. Transfer this buttermilk mixture to a pan, on low heat bring to a boil. Turn off the heat, when it begins to boil and add the tempering.
6.  For tempering; Heat oil in a separate pan, add mustard+urad dal, when it begins to pop, add fenugreek seeds, curry leaves and add this to the buttermilk curry. Serve with white rice.

Note: When ladies finger is used it should be roasted in oil, cooked and then added to the buttermilk, before putting it on stove.
When ripe mango is used(sliced) it can be directly added to the buttermilk along with the other ingredients and then cooked on low heat.
